Having an easy-to-navigate mobile website is no longer optional. Google will penalize you by withholding the new “mobile-friendly” tag from your mobile search results. Here’s what they say about the tag:

This message shows under search results when Google thinks the site works well on a phone (mobile-friendly). The site works well because it doesn’t make you zoom to see parts of the page, or it doesn’t use features like Flash that you don’t usually have on your device.

It’s pretty clear that you have to have a good looking mobile site if you want to keep up in the Google rankings. Want to find out how your site stacks up? Put your URL into Google’s Mobile Friendly Test page [https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/ ] for results and suggestions.
